Hello, Polio Survivors!

Yesterday was a perfect day for a picnic.  So, that’s what we did!  Our October meeting was brief

and factual, so that more important topics could be continued, those including eating, playing

games, visiting, and more eating!  We gathered at the Sea Breeze park in La Porte – covered

pavilion, picnic tables, waterfront with pier, and very handicapped accessible.

For those of you who couldn’t join us, the weather was perfect, the company even better, and the

food delicious.  About 23 survivors and family members were able to attend, allowing plenty of

time to visit with one another.  I don’t think anyone left hungry, not with barbeque brisket, hot

dogs, and all the great side dishes and fixings, plus desserts to finish off the meal.

John and Doris led our meeting, providing details on topics for the November and December

meetings.  Going back to the first Saturday in the month for November, we will once again meet

at the La Porte Library at 10:30 a.m.  David Normand will be our guest speaker.  He will provide

information on care and maintenance of wheelchairs, scooters and similar assistive devices, as

well as answer questions we have on purchases of these based on individual necessity.

Whether you are currently using an assistive device or are considering a future purchase, this is

certainly a meeting to attend.

During our November meeting, we will also finalize the plans for our December meeting.  But, it’s

going to be fun!  Please bring a gift (something you wouldn’t mind having in your own home) of

no more than a $15 value, wrapped but with no name tags.  Also, dig through your cards and

boxes, and bring the oldest Christmas card you have – that will go back home with you.  We’re

also discussing having a bake exchange, with everyone bringing their favorite holiday dessert

and recipe.  Everyone will be able to leave with a sampling of each dessert, and some new recipes!

Plus, we can taste them all to decide which dessert is the best.

Information on a recent disclosure of fake diabetic insulin strips being marketed was provided.  If you are a diabetic, it is important to make sure these strips are not being used as they give inaccurate results.  Check with your pharmacy or doctor’s office to verify that the ones you use are good.

It was a nice change of pace to be able to relax and visit with one another, to meet new people, and to participate and enjoy watching the games being played by both young and ‘not-quite-so-old’ alike.  Special thanks are extended to Howard and his son, Charles, for providing the barbeque and trimmings, and bringing warming trays, tables, ice, etc. And, John’s mother, Joan Hartman, also gets special thanks for decorating the tables, and making such adorable table decorations.  Of course, those who won those decorations as door prizes went home very happy!

Enjoy the cooler weather, and remember to check our web site for regular updates provided by Mark, our web master.

 See you in November!
